Barely a year and a half after introducing its services in the scarcely regulated Dominican transportation market, Uber announced the launch of UberMOTO, a private transport service for passengers on motorcycles, under the framework of a new law that regulates the transportation of persons in the Dominican Republic.

In both legal scenarios, the famous start-up from Silicon Valley was counseled by Pellerano & Herrera, the leading law firm in the Dominican Republic.

The launch of this new product once again highlights the need of rapid response and adaptation to the legal frameworks in the more than 60 countries where Uber has entered, always with the support of the best local law firms.

Law No. 63-17 on Mobility, Ground Transportation, Transit and Road Safety was recently enacted in the Dominican Republic and is in force since February 21, 2017.

"The emerging markets where Uber steps in tend to formalize and in the case of those highly regulated markets where Uber ventures, propel themselves towards liberalization in benefit of both the user and the new service providers", explained Luis Rafael Pellerano, partner of Pellerano & Herrera and legal representative of Uber in the country.

Uber revolutionizes the market wherever it arrives, joining the creativity and the national entrepreneurial spirit to create new sources of income and to offer better means of transportation to the people, adapted to their needs for safety, comfort, rapid response and more competitive prices, Pellerano stated.

"Naturally, the Dominican Republic has not been the exception to the phenomenon of the shared economy, becoming the first country in Latin America to implement what is already known in the world as moto-sharing"

Pellerano & Herrera's partner explained that the law firm performed the due diligence to facilitate Uber's entry into the Dominican Republic in 2015, advised Uber during its introductory phase in the country and also represented it in the disputes that followed its foray into the Dominican market.

Likewise, Pellerano & Herrera provided legal support for the introduction of UberMOTO, which will operate in Santo Domingo and Santiago initially, the two main cities of the Caribbean country.
