Pellerano Messina, new firm specialized in intellectual property

By means of a corporate alliance, two renowned professionals in law of the Dominican Republic announced the creation of a law firm specializing in intellectual property in order to respond to traditional legal matters as well as those of the new economy in the digital era.
The new firm, Pellerano Messina, led by lawyers Ricardo Pellerano and Ana Isabel Messina, will function independently from Pellerano & Herrera, with a team of professionals specialized in trademarks, patents, copyrights, unfair competition, regulatory issues, among other related matters.
The firm will handle matters related to new technologies and digital law in the context of the new economy covering aspects such as artificial intelligence and the development of online businesses.
Ricardo Pellerano expressed that under the leadership of Ana Isabel Messina, who from the genesis of her career has specialized in intellectual property, not only in the Dominican Republic but abroad, the new firm will provide timely and efficient services in accordance with the highest professional standards tailored to the needs of the market.
On her part, Messina expressed satisfaction with the alliance which -from her point of view- creates an opportunity to satisfy the needs of specialized legal services in intellectual property in the context of the new economy.
Intellectual Property in Dominican Republic
The laws that govern intellectual property in the country – Law 65-00 on Copyright and the Law 20-00 regarding Industrial Property- have been in force for 20 years. Intellectual property rights are recognized under Article 52 of the Dominican Constitution, which establishes “the right to exclusive property in the works of scientific, literary, artistic, inventions and innovations, denominations, brands, distinctive signs and other productions of human intellect is recognized and protected”.
Ana Isabel Messina is a well- recognized expert in intellectual property in the Dominican Republic, achieving great prestige nationally and internationally. Messina participated in the drafting of several IP laws, among those the aforementioned Laws 65-00 and 20-00, and collaborated as the Dominican government’s advisor in the area in 1994 under the free trade agreement ALCA. She is the former president of the Dominican Association of Intellectual Property and actively participates in numerous international associations in the field such as the Inter American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI), International Association for the Protection of Industrial and Intellectual Property (AIPPI), International Trademark Association (INTA), Pharmaceutical Trade Marks Group (PTMG), European Communities Trade Mark Association (ECTA) and the IP Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA). The World Trademark Review 1000 classifies her as “absolutely fantastic” and “the dean of trademarks” in the Caribbean region. Classified by Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500 as a leader in Intellectual Property Law.
Ricardo Pellerano forms part of Pellerano & Herrera since 1975, and became managing partner in 1986. He has over 45 years of experience and has focused his legal practice in corporate matters, banking and finance, capital markets, insurance, tourism and real estate. His practice also encompasses mergers and acquisitions and he has advised local and international companies in various industries, in the areas of tourism and real estate.
